magazine language analysis

The language in magazines is important so that the readers are attracted, intrigued and want to continue reading on. The language used in NME is colloquial. On the front cover, the cover line says "Marilyn Manson goes ape" this cover line uses animal imagery to attract the readers as the word "ape" is associated with monkeys and also going crazy and wild. This type of language attracts a younger audience of teenagers as its informal however entertaining and it stands out which makes the reader want to read on because they wonder why does Marilyn Manson go ape?

Next, another cover line says "Its time for chaos!" the use of the exclamation mark emphasis's that there is going to be a lot of chaos within the magazine, which conveys that the magazine will overall be great to read. If the use of the words "we" or "us" were used on the front cover of the magazine it would attract more readers because then it would be more welcoming and friendly.

The context of the language used inside the magazine is formal however the cover lines are informal for example " mate, when it`s all over, i need you to clear my browser history" this attracts the reader because the word "mate" makes the reader feel welcome which therefore makes the reader want to read on.

The cover lines on the front cover are also formal, one example is "listening with intent" and another cover line which is the only informal cover line on the front cover says "No rules!" this attracts the readers because it makes the magazine seem interesting as there are no rules and it stands out. The language used in Jazzwise attracts a slightly older audience as the word  "Jazz" in the title symbolises jazz music and the word "wise" could symbolise older wiser people. Also the formal language attracts the audience whereas if the language was informal a younger audience would be attracted.

The language used inside the magazine makes the reader want to read on because as the language is formal and technical, it addresses the reader and keeps them entertained. In the editors letter a quote that makes the reader feel welcome is “ in Q review, you`ll find our full, unvarnished opinion” this makes the reader feel welcome because it directly addresses the audience by stating “you`ll” this suggests that it`s certain and you`ll definitely find an opinion.

The language used is formal   “As stunning as it was, it seems charmingly straightforward  now” this quote shows the language used isn't the Queens English however is does show the editor is well spoken. The words “charmingly and stunning” are highly descriptive and not simple words so therefore it makes  the editors letter more overt prestige.

The photo of the editor links to the magazines target audience because the target audience is for men aged 25-50 and for people who like rock music. The editor is Matt Mason and his photo fits in with the age of the target audience.




Celestial shine magazine
In the editors letter we are directly addressed which makes us the audience feel welcome the letter says " i know that you are all teenage girls" this makes the reader feel like the editor Emily is talking to us face to face and it makes the reader feel like she`s a friend. Therefore this makes us want to read on because it makes us feel like the magazine will continue to address us directly. Also the magazine aims for girls to be "celestial" and it says " we have some important decisions to make" the use of the word "we" makes the audience feel like we`re all going to make the decisions together including the editor which makes us feel welcome.

The editors letter makes the reader want to read on because the letter says "We only use real girls as our models and limit editing and photo shopping" this is quite unusual that the models haven't been photo shopped because in most magazines they have been so this  draws the readers attention prompting them to read on.

The photo of the editor relates to the magazines target audience because the target audience are young to teenage girls and the editor Emily looks young and the photo seems like not much editing has been done to it, also it fits in with the magazines target audience as the photo seems like not much editing has been done to it.

The language used is formal which shows she is well spoken and the language is creative and it engages the readers attention.  She talks in the present and past tense when she is  referring to herself this makes the editors letter clear and effective and easy to understand.
